It all started when…

Emergency Shelter Program Inc. (now Ruby's Place Inc.) was established in Hayward, California, in 1971 by a local group of women who decided that there needed to be a safe place for “battered women” to go. Collectively they built an agency that still stands today with the desire and commitment to end domestic violence and human trafficking, one person at a time. Betty Moose, one of the founding members, officially incorporated the shelter in March 1972.

Our Foundation

Our agency philosophy is built on having a strong healthy team to provide the best experience for clients in our care. We believe quality work starts with a program that is client-centered and built on trauma-informed care. We have voluntary services coupled with the intentional care of our staff for a holistic approach.

We are here to support and grow with our clients.

We believe in low-barrier programs with the fewest “rules” possible. A client’s choice is our choice and we will assist in the decision-making process only if it is requested of us. We view our clients as people with the agency to make their own choices and decisions for their lives, even if those choices go against our own personal beliefs as staff.

Make it stand out

Clients are not seen as people that need to be fixed or need our assistance in order to survive. At Ruby’s Place, we encourage self-reflection among both clients and staff. Decisions are not made on the basis of our needs or comfortability.

Our Vision:

A world where safety and trust come first.
We exist to end interpersonal violence.
